Masike's appointment follows months of turbulence in the council after the previous Registrar, Dr Boikhutso Motau was suspended shortly after his appointment in 2021 following charges of corruption and fraud that related to his tenure as Head of the Free State Health Department between 2011 and 2015.

Dr Masike takes over from Dr Thabo Pinkoane who led the HPCSA in an acting capacity for the past eight months.

Dr Masike was MEC for Health from 2010 to 2018. He holds an MBChB and a Masters in Business Administration (MBA). He was also President of the SAMA in Northwest, a member of the Provincial Legislature in the province and chairperson of the Portfolio Committee for Finance in the Office of the Premier.

The HPCSA has hailed his appointment as “a step in the right direction that will go a long way in bringing much-needed stability to the organisation.”

In a statement, the Council says the new Registrar boasts a wealth of knowledge in the private and public healthcare sectors as well as extensive experience in leadership and governance. He is also no stranger to the HPCSA having served as Chairperson of the Undesirable Business Practice Committee and as a member of the Audit Committee.

During his tenure, he interacted with health regulatory bodies of India, Malaysia and the United States of America (USA) to gain insights into international best practice.

“Dr Masike‘s unifying character will undoubtedly bring stability within the Health Professions Council of South Africa,” said HPCSA President, Prof Simon Nemutandani.
